Run with the Heroes 5K honors fallen first responders

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin community laced up its sneakers to remember fallen first responders Sunday morning.

The Austin Police Department held its annual Run with the Heroes 5K at Camp Mabry and dedicated this year’s run to Police Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq. He was working a funeral procession when a car crashed into his motorcycle last year and fatally injured him.

“It lets us honor our word to the families of the fallen when we tell them ‘your loved one will not be forgotten,'” said Austin interim Police Chief Brian Manley. “They will be forever remembered by this department and this community.”

Proceeds from the run will be donated to the Special Olympics of Texas.
