AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 57-year-old man, mistaken as an aggressor in a road rage incident on MoPac, was violently attacked last Tuesday.
Grant Morgan said he was driving South on the highway when he noticed two competing drivers, one in a White Toyota Tundra and the other in a black Volvo SUV, acting aggressively and throwing things out their windows at one another.
“As I was going to change lanes, I noticed two vehicles in front of me swerving back and forth, stopping and starting and gesturing to each other.” Morgan said. “They continued to do this for probably 500 to 600 yards and then they split off. One exited on Bee Cave and the truck continued down MoPac.”
Morgan, who also drives a white Toyota Tundra, said he exited the highway behind the Volvo toward Bee Cave Road. The still-unknown driver began following Morgan and attempted to exit his vehicle and confront him on several occasions near the MoPac frontage road.
Morgan said he tried to elude him but blew two tires. That’s when he said the violent assault occured on a median next to MoPac.
“I didn’t think he was anywhere around and I got out to inspect the damage. And just as I looked, he comes running up across the street and attacks me with a bottle in his hand,” Morgan said. “He made short-work of me. In one minute, he beat me to a senseless pulp. He could have killed me easily,” Morgan said.
Morgan said he was was hit in the arm with a beer bottle and kicked in the face. The suspect also stole his phone before taking off.
“Once he kicked me in the head, it was over,” Morgan said.
Morgan’s eye was swollen shut and he has bruises and scrapes all over his body. On Tuesday he received x-rays to see if there is internal damage.
But at this point, he’s just worried about this guy getting to somebody else.
“If anything happens, call 911. Make sure someone knows where you are and what is happening. Because it can escalate in a heartbeat,” Morgan said.
Morgan filed an official police report, but hasn’t heard back from the Austin Police Department. KXAN has also requested additional information regarding the assault from police.
Morgan describes the suspect as white, bald, standing around 6’0″ with an athletic build. At the time, he was wearing a light-colored button-down and Dingo boots. He was driving a black Volvo SUV.
KXAN’s Alex Caprariello will have an in-depth look at this road rage assault tonight on KXAN News at 10.
