AUSTIN (KXAN) — One Austin woman’s mission to get her voice heard is gaining some attention on social media. Candace Hunter made two videos recently detailing some problems she says exist at her apartment complex.
Hunter told KXAN she lives at Reserve at Springdale, an affordable housing apartment complex in east Austin.
Renters have to go through a lengthy application process and make 60 percent of Austin’s median income to live there.
“I was so excited,” Hunter said. “It was beautiful. It was going to be a mid-rise in east Austin, and it was going to be affordable. That was the part that excited me.”
However, Hunter said that excitement turned in to disappointment pretty quickly.
“It started with parking lot trash,” she said. “People leaving diapers. People leaving like their food trash. And then it became this is my house trash. I’m just going to leave it here.”
In her YouTube video, Hunter shows an elevator that’s not working, a dirty trash room and a broken fence. She also says the hallways have never been power washed.
“There’s a responsibility both for management and with the residents that live here,” she said. “This is a beautiful place. We need to respect it and treat it well and that’s not happening.”
Reserve at Springdale is owned by Ryan Companies and Austin Affordable Housing Corporation and is managed by Lincoln Property Company.
The complex officially opened about one year ago, the owners said.
“Obviously surprised because we have done everything in our power to address any issues that may have arose,” said Allyson McKay, senior vice president with Lincoln Property Company, when we asked about the video.
She said they’ve addressed the problems. “Each one of the pictures are of an individual incident,” she said. “That’s not ongoing. That’s not every day.”
McKay said storms damaged a fence. The company has put in a temporary fence until they can line up all the vendors and finalize insurance claims, so they can fix it permanently.
In response to the trash problem, McKay said, “As soon as our occupancy really jumped up, I think that we had a misstep on trash. We bumped our carrier, and we changed all of our hours, so they showed up on Fridays and Saturdays. Plus we rearranged our staff so they were also here on weekends.”
McKay also added Reserve at Springdale is required to be inspected by the Department of Housing and Community Affairs every year.
State officials conduct exterior inspections and go into about 10 percent of the units for interior checks.
They scored 94 out of 100 in the most recent inspection.
