Recent UT grad found dead in San Francisco Bay

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KXAN) — A 23-year-old woman who was found dead in the water along a hiking trail in Sunnyvale, California last week was a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.

Sunnyvale police said a bicyclist spotted the body of Chuchu Ma — who also went by Sarah — in the water along the Bay Trail Thursday morning. The Google software engineer was reported missing in Mountain View that same day.

According to Ma’s LinkedIn page, she graduated with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from UT in 2016. During her time at UT, she also worked as an undergraduate research assistant and teaching assistant.

She worked at Google for more than a year. A representative from Google tells KXAN’s sister station KRON4, “Chuchu was an excellent software engineer in our developer product team. We are devastated to learn of her passing, and our deepest condolences are with her family and friends.”

Chu worked at Austin-based STEMed LABS during college. Rapal Nathuji, the co-founder of the organization, says he was saddened and shocked to hear the news.

“Sarah was a generous, kind hearted person and a great team member,” he said. “She genuinely cared about sharing her knowledge and passion for learning with the next generation. We are devastated to learn of her passing, and our deepest condolences are with her family and friends.”

KRON reports police have not released many details surrounding Ma’s death or if she was the victim of a crime. The Sunnyvale Police Department is currently waiting on autopsy results to determine Ma’s cause of death.With additional reporting by KRON.
