AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are following leads, searching for multiple persons of interest after a man was shot at a north Austin hotel Sunday night.
A caller reported an “explosion” to police just after 8 p.m. on one of the floors of the Quality Inn & Suites Downtown North at 7928 Gessner Dr, according to police.
Senior Police Officer Marcos Johnson said several people were seen running through the lobby of the hotel a few moments after the explosion.
Police said Monday a man was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:31 p.m. They are working to notify his family before releasing his name. The Travis County Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to officially rule on the cause of death.
Austin police say the shooting appears to be an “isolated incident.”
Police interviewed several witnesses.
Hotel guests Sergy LeMeshevskiy and his girlfriend arrived right after the shooting happened and were also questioned by police.
“I just couldn’t believe what happened and then all the cops showed up, a stretcher came, and that’s when I knew something serious was happening.”
Investigators say when they arrived, they searched the hotel floor-by-floor and discovered a victim on the floor of one of the rooms. He was declared dead at the scene.
LeMeshevskiy says it was on the third floor of the hotel, close to his room. He says he watched as officers investigated outside of the hotel room.
“They were here for about a good 12 hours,” LeMeshevskiy said. “Every time I came out, there was one or two cops standing by the room just making sure, securing the place or whatever, and then there was tape, ‘police line do not cross,’ all across the whole third floor.”
While investigators don’t have immediately have suspect descriptions in the shooting, they do believe the victim and suspects knew each other and there is no perceived threat to the general public.
