Police robot finds man dead inside home after south Austin SWAT standoff

Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin police SWAT team was called to a house in south Austin Monday evening after a woman came out of the house with critical blunt force injuries to her head and face.

The standoff ended just before 9 p.m. when a police robot found a man dead inside the home. Detectives are investigating the death as suspicious.

Austin-Travis County EMS says the woman in her 50s was taken to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center and medics called for APD after learning she may have been injured by her roommate or boyfriend inside the home.

Officers were called to the 3000 block of Fontana Drive, south of the intersection of Oltorf and First streets, around 4:12 p.m. The address is a block away from Dawson Elementary School.

In a briefing just after 7 p.m., APD said the suspect inside was refusing to come out and, based on a police database, officers believe he had weapons. Neighbors evacuated by police from around the home are now being allowed to return.

Other than the woman, no one else was injured, police say. “I’ve never seen a SWAT situation like this,” neighbor Nick Thornton said. “I didn’t expect to be spending my Monday evening like this.”

APD was asking people to avoid the area. St. Edward’s University issued an advisory to its students nearby to stay away from the scene.
