AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Deparment is continuing its investigation into the officer-involved shooting that happened April 28 near Pennybacker Bridge, releasing names of the man who was killed and the two officers who were involved.
During the incident, officers responded to the scene of a disturbance between a husband and a wife at the 5200 block of Loop 360, according to investigators. Police say the woman was trying to get away from her husband, Carlos Manuel Dodero, who later violently pinned her to the ground and away from people trying to help her, before running from the scene and into a wooded area nearby.
Around 6:20 p.m., officers fired at Dodero. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services took him to a local trauma center with critical life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
Two officers were involved in the shooting: Hugh Butler and William Bertelson. Butler is a K-9 patrol officer and Bertelson is assigned to Central West Patrol. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave.
This case will be administratively investigated by APD’s Internal Affairs Unit and monitored by the Office of the Police Oversight. A concurrent investigation will be conducted by APD’s Special Investigations Unit, in conjunction with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.
