AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Police detectives are investigating after officers found a man shot to death late Sunday night near Austin Police headquarters downtown.

Police said the man called 911 around 10:20 p.m. on North Interstate 35 near Ninth Street, saying multiple people robbed him, and he needed help as soon as possible. The call then disconnected.

When officers arrived, APD said it found two abandoned vehicles. The man, Duvan Betancourth-Gonzalez, 34, was found inside one of the vehicles.

Police found a vehicle driven by one of the people accused of shooting Betancourth-Gonzalez. Investigators have identified a person of interest connected to this case, APD said.

An autopsy conducted by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office found the cause of death to be gunshot wounds, APD said.

This case is being investigated as Austin’s 35th homicide of 2022, APD said.
