Officials honor Texas police officers who have died in line of duty

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin community leaders have dedicated the next several days to honoring officers who have died in the line of duty in 2018. 

Whites colleagues in blue, family and friends said good to the fallen officer on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.

One of those being remembered is Officer Charles Whites, who was the first Round Rock Police Officer to die on duty. He died April 27, 2018, more than two months after a car struck him while he was directing traffic at a fatal wreck on I-35

A group of more than 1,000 motorcyclists from across the nation rode to the Texas Capitol on Saturday to honor fallen officers. 

They rode from the Cowboy Harley-Davidson location at 10917 South I-35 to the Texas Peace Officer’s Memorial Wall at the Capitol for their annual fundraiser, Ride for the Fallen.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday at the Memorial Monument and Sen. John Whitmire will deliver a keynote address. It will be held at 8 p.m.

A memorial ceremony is happening Monday at 11 a.m. on the south steps of the Capitol where Gov. Greg Abbott will present medals and resolutions to surviving family members. 

Law enforcement from across the state, friends and family members of fallen officers, elected officials and supporters will be there.

  • Scott Ragsdale, United States Bureau of ATF
  • Lonnie V. Burton, Wayland Baptist University Police Department
  • Jarrod K. Friddle, Cumby Police Department
  • Earl J. Givens III, Dallas Police Department
  • Garrett W. Hull, Fort Worth Police Department
  • Mark A. Cox, Real County Sheriff’s Office
  • Raymond Bradley Jimmerson, Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office
  • Kristopher D. Youngberg, United States Dept. of Energy – NNS
  • Loren Y. Vasquez, Waller County Sheriff’s Office
