Bicyclists arrived in Austin Sunday morning for the Texas Police Officers Memorial Ride.
It’s the fourth annual 150-mile bicycle ride to honor Texas police officers killed in 2017. All money raised from the event goes to family members and coworkers left behind.
It’s a need that some say often is forgotten as time passes.
“When we lose an officer, we get a lot of support immediately afterwards,” Farmers Branch Police Officer Steve Rutherford said. “And then when we get a couple weeks out, the attention kind of goes away and they are left to deal with this tragedy. And what I would say is, let’s continue to support these survivors. Let’s continue to honor these heroes.”
Riders plan to attend the Texas Peace Officers candlelight vigil ceremony Sunday night at the state Capitol.
