Mother’s ashes stolen from south Austin home

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman says the most precious thing in her life has been stolen.

On Wednesday, a thief took an urn containing the ashes of her mother.

“She was here in her own home where I thought she wanted to be, and someone would do this,” said Lauren Schultz. Her mother Mary Ann died seven years ago. Her ashes were tucked on the mantle of the family home on Barker Hollow Pass in the Shady Hollow neighborhood in south Austin.

Schultz’s father John died a few weeks ago. His ashes were next to his wife’s on the fireplace mantle. They left his ashes, but took something else that was deeply personal.

“My dad was in the war and he had these decorated medals and pins. They’re gone too. So, what are you going to do with that?”

Schultz says she is a spiritual person, but is having a difficult time absorbing what has happened.

“I know her spirit is on the other side, but I’m sorry that I left her here and I feel like that I which I had taken her out of here sooner. Now I have nothing but this picture and an empty feeling.”

The thief took reams of personal papers but left behind expensive electronics. The house alarm was unarmed then, but it is now. Schultz hopes the thief will have a heart and return the urn.

“Please, if anyone knows anything or hears or whatever, just please return it, return the box,” she said.

Travis County Sheriff’s deputies have no leads in the burglary. Anyone with information on the case can contact the Capital Area Crime Stoppers tip line at 512-472-TIPS (8477).
