TRAVIS COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — In addition to collecting meals and toys, this year the Travis County Sheriff’s Office is running into a new issue: needing more families to sign up to benefit from its Brown Santa program.
Each year hundreds of families who live in unincorporated areas of Travis County sign up to receive a free meal and children’s toys. To benefit, families must be at or below the poverty line and submit an application at the rural community center near where they live in Pflugerville, Manor, Jonestown, Oakhill/Lake Travis or Del Valle.
Mary Rodriguez, the chairman of the Brown Santa Program, says currently they are low on the number of people applying for the program, and the group wants to get the word out to people who may not know about it.
The deadline to sign up is Dec. 3.
Other counties have similar Brown Santa programs, and the Austin Police Department runs its Operation Blue Santa each year to share gifts with children in need.
