AUSTIN (KXAN) — Emergency responders found a man’s body floating in lady Bird Lake east of Interstate 35 Monday morning. Austin police said it cannot confirm at this time whether the body is Martin Gutierrez, a young man who went missing last week.
The Gutierrez family was at the police staging area where police spoke to the press and the body was taken to shore. They say police suggested they show up but did not tell them the body found was Martin.
Around 9:50 a.m. a caller reported someone in the river near the 1300 block of East Riverside Drive. Austin-Travis County EMS reported the person was dead and that the Austin Fire Department launched a boat to get to the body.
Medics said the man’s body was recovered from the river in a tweet sent at 10:20 a.m. A police spokeswoman said at a briefing police are “not able to determine age, race or gender,” but said homicide and missing persons units are on scene during the investigation.
The area is near where 25-year-old Gutierrez disappeared Nov. 19, prompting family and friends to hold multiple searches in the following week. Some of those same people who had been searching for Martin Gutierrez were at the police scene near Lady Bird Lake on Monday.
“At this time, we are not able to confirm that the body located is related to any open missing person investigations. We are also not able to determine age, race, or gender,” Officer Destiny Sylva told the press on the scene Monday morning, “Anytime that we find a deceased person, of course we want information so if you were in the area, or if you saw anything suspicious or just something out of the ordinary please call.”
