Man killed trying to cross I-35 identified by Austin police

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man killed after attempting to cross Interstate Highway 35 Tuesday was identified Thursday by Austin police.

Michael Mayes, 60, was attempting to cross the highway at the 100 block of I-35 near East Cesar Chavez Street. He was struck by a car heading south along the inside lane. The road was shut down for about two hours while officials investigated.

Police say the driver of the vehicle stopped to help Mayes and cooperated with police. Mayes succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The driver is not expected to be charged.

This is Austin 26th fatal traffic crash of 2019 and 27th fatality.
