AUSTIN (KXAN) — One man was killed and five people hurt after a rollover wreck closed all lanes of US Highway 290 near Dripping Springs for most of Tuesday morning.
The crash was reported just after 6:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of US 290 near Fitzhugh Road.
Austin-Travis County EMS personnel helped extricate victims stuck in their cars. One man, identified as 33-year-old Samuel Joseph Lowrance from Driftwood, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people were rushed to the hospital in critical condition and two sustained serious injuries, according to ATCEMS.
Traffic was stalled for hours with the major artery blocked. For three hours, officials let a few cars pass at a time. By 9:30 a.m. officials opened up one lane in each direction to ease traffic congestion.
All lanes of US 290 were finally reopened at about 11:30 a.m. about five hours after the wreck occurred.
