Man killed in crash last week after running red light near ABIA

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man killed in a crash last week in southeast Austin near the Austin-Bergstrom International airport has been identified, according to Austin police.

APD responded to a call of a crash at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 off South State Highway 130 service road, near the intersection of State Highway 71.

 According to the initial investigation, a 2017 Honda Accord traveling northbound on SH 130. The driver, 75-year-old Steven Tibbetts, admitted to running a red light at the intersection of SH 130 and SH 71, and collided with an oncoming Ford F-250.

Both drivers remained at the scene and intoxication is not believed to be a factor in the crash, according to police.

Tibbetts was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas. He died of his injuries later that night at approximately 10:52 p.m.

This is Austin’s 58th traffic fatality of 2018. APD is still investigating this incident and advise anyone with information to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-3761.
