Man killed after hitting tree following I-35 frontage road wreck identified

Tech Ridge Fatal Tree Collision

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A driver involved in a crash that sent his car into a tree on the Interstate 35 frontage road in north Austin late Sunday night has been identified.

Police say Patrick Leonard Ervin, 52, died after a collision on the 12100 block of the northbound I-35, which is near Tech Ridge Boulevard. Police say he was driving a Hyundai Elantra when a person driving a Camry “tried to take over the lane that the Elantra driver was in and lost control of the vehicle.” It happened at 11:34 a.m. Sunday.

Both cars went off the road and Ervin’s car hit a tree. The driver of the Camry went to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It’s not known how that person is doing now.

Austin police say this is the 29th fatal traffic crash this year and that a total of 30 people have died in those crashes. At this time last year, 23 people had died in 22 fatal crashes.
