Man killed after drifting into oncoming traffic last week identified

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man killed in a crash after drifting into oncoming traffic last week in south Austin has been identified.

Austin police officers responded to the call at 2:53 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The crash occurred at 1200 Farm to Market Road 1327, near the intersection of Interstate 35 and State Highway 45.

According to investigators, a 2002 Nissan was traveling westbound on FM 1327 when the car began drifting into the eastbound lane. An oncoming Peterbilt tractor-trailer traveling eastbound attempted to avoid the Nissan, but was struck.

The driver of the Nissan, 61-year-old John Herrera, was pronounced dead at the scene. This is the 59th traffic fatality in Austin for 2018.

APD is investigating this crash, and advise anyone with information to call the APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at (512) 974-3761.
