AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man died Friday morning after a car hit him on northbound Interstate 35 between US 290 and US 183.

The crash happened around 6:31 a.m. in the 6100 block of N. I-35, near East St. Johns Avenue. The car was driving in the inside lane at the time of the crash, Austin police say.

“It’s tragic any time we lose a life,” said Sgt. David Daniels. “It’s tragic for the driver. It’s tragic for the family involved.”

Daniels said there are no charges pending against the driver.

So far in Austin this year there have been 23 auto-pedestrian collisions, and 16 of those involved people crossing in a prohibited area or didn’t yield the right of way. He encouraged anyone who sees someone who may be trying to cross the street in a dangerous place to call 911 so police can try to prevent any injuries.

Northbound lanes of I-35 shut down for a few hours drivers were diverted to the frontage road.
