Man escapes house fire in south Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man escaped a fire that destroyed much of the south Austin house he was sleeping in Sunday night.

Just before midnight, firefighters arrived to 4510 Richmond Avenue and found a heavy fire in the back of the home had spread. They knocked it down in about 10 minutes, according to Austin Fire Department Division Chief Palmer Buck. He said neighbors alerted the man, while Austin Fire Info tweeted he woke up after the smoke alarm went off.

Three people who lived in the house are staying with friends. Only one of them was home at the time.

Fire investigators say the cause appears to be improperly discarded smoking materials. The damage was estimated to be $80,000.
