Man driving wrong way in New Braunfels arrested on drunk driving charges after crash

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — A man was arrested in New Braunfels Saturday after allegedly driving drunk in the wrong lane on Texas Loop 337 and striking another vehicle head-on, according to New Braunfels police. 

Police were dispatched to the scene of a crash in the 1200 block of Loop 337 around 10:41 p.m. Witnesses told officers that a 66-year-old man driving a 2009 Chevrolet pickup was driving north in the southbound lane.

According to police, a Mazda traveling south collided with the truck head-on. A 43-year-old passenger in the Mazda was seriously injured in the crash and had to be extricated by the New Braunfels Fire Department. She was airlifted to the San Antonio Military Medical Center and is still in critical condition.

Police were able to determine during an investigation that the driver of the pickup truck was drunk and he was placed under arrest. He was brought to the Comal County Sheriff’s office and is charged with intoxication assault.

Authorities had to close the 1200 block of Loop 337 for four and a half hours while the scene was cleared and documented. The investigation is now being handled by the New Braunfels Police Department’s Traffic Unit.
