Man dies after being rescued from Barton Creek

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man who was found underwater at Barton Creek Thursday afternoon died.

Austin-Travis County EMS says it responded to the 2200 block of Barton Springs Road around 5:45 p.m. The initial call stated the male patient was in the water in the creek area near Barton Springs Pool.

CPR was started on the man, who is in his 20s, but he was declared deceased a few minutes later. ATCEMS says it is not known at this time how long the man was underwater.

Austin police say a city lifeguard trainee started CPR on the man until officers and then medics took over.

Gabe Gasner, who saw what happened, said someone started yelling for a doctor. “And, these girls said they were nurses so they started coming up and started to give him CPR and mouth-to-mouth.”

A sign near the creek says swimming is not recommended and warns there is not a lifeguard on duty.
