Man arrested in connection to south Austin hit and run that killed 5-year-old


AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was arrested Tuesday, April 16 in connection to a deadly hit-and-run that killed a five-year-old girl in south Austin back in March, according to Austin police.

The victim, Illianna Martinez, was riding in her family’s Toyota Venza on the morning of March 21 on Palo Blanco Lane near Teri Road.

Police say 22-year-old Jorge Alberto Granados was driving a 2013 Dodge Ram traveling east on Teri Road and hit the Venza on the left side. Witnesses told police the people in the Ram ran away on foot. 

The family riding in the Venza were all transported to Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas, where Martinez died from her injuries on March 30.

Austin police requested help from the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in apprehending Granados. An anonymous tipster placed Granados in New Orleans and he was later arrested in Slidell Louisiana.

Granados was extradited back to Austin and is in custody in the Travis County Jail. He faces three charges of accident involving injury, according to jail records.
