AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you regularly take US 183 South to get to the Austin airport, make sure you know about some major closures along that route this weekend.
From Friday night through Monday morning, southbound US 183 will be closed over the Colorado River. The closure will take place at night on June 15-18, weather permitting, between 8 p.m.-10 a.m.
The closure allows for crews to remove the existing Montopolis Drive bridge over US 183 (not the steel bridge) and construct a new and improved bridge over US 183.
During the closures, drivers going southbound will be forced to exit at Bolm Road and take Levander Loop around. Drivers should allow for extra time or find an alternate route.
While the bridge removal will be done this weekend, Montopolis Drive traffic will be detoured for the next 12 months.
All of these changes are part of the 183 South Project that is creating new toll lanes in each direction between US 290 and State Highway 71.
