AUSTIN (KXAN) — For the third year in a row, student archers from Highland Park Elementary School are headed to Kentucky to take aim at a national title.
The Scottie Shooters came into existence in 2017, and the team has secured its spot in the top contest every year they’ve tried. Two teams of 24 archers will compete against hundreds of other elementary school teams from across the country.
The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) hosts the tournament for students from elementary to high school. Nearly 15,000 kids will shoot across all age levels.
“I’m pretty excited, but kind of nervous, too,” said Sofia Villanueva, a Highland Park fifth-grader headed to nationals. “I shot a personal best at state, and state is pretty big. But nationals is even bigger.”
The team is accepting donations to cover costs of the trip here. The Scottie Shooters compete Friday and will know whether they won on Saturday.
