KYLE, Texas (KXAN) — A bill currently being proposed in the Texas Legislature hopes to designate Kyle as the official Pie Capital of Texas for 10 years.
Bill SCR 18 states:
“Whether it’s pecan pie, apple pie, blueberry pie or pot pie — a pie is an occasion for celebration and delight. And the people of Kyle are making this beloved dish a special focus of their identitiy as a community; now, therefore, be it resolved that the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby designate Kyle as the official Pie Capital of Texas…”
The bill lists various reasons the city is worthy of the designation, including the city serving as the home to the Texas Pie Company, which has served the area for two decades.
Additionally, Kyle has hosted its annual Pie in the Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival since 2017 and the city mayor has also proclaimed Jan. 23 as Pie Day, which coincides with the national celebration of the dish.
The city also observes National Pi Day on March 14. Through its “CertiPIEd” business initiative, the Kyle has aimed to encourage local businesses to incorporate pie into their operations, including pie-shaped/scented candles at the Hampton Inn and pie-eating contests at Broadway Bank.
Kyle has joined the American Pie Council and applied for a pie-related trademark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
