GREENWOOD, Missouri (KXAN) — A sixth-month-old girl is recovering after her father admitted to trying to drown the baby in a Missouri pond.
Jonathon Zicarelli, 28, walked into the Greenwood police department this Monday morning and told officers he had just drowned his child.
Police got the location and were at the pond, within minutes. When they arrived at the scene they found the baby floating face up.
First responders performed CPR and warmed her as quickly as possible.
Zicarelli told detectives he was having “bad thoughts” and said he was stressed out by the holidays and thought killing his daughter would make it easier on his wife.
“I think if anyone is in crisis state I would advise they would seek out help and there’s a lot of resources out there, to say the least,” said Lt. Aaron Fordham of the Greenwood Police
Experts say parents killing a child is more common than we think. According to a 2017 report by Brown University, on average, about 500 kids are killed by their parents every year.
