AUSTIN (KXAN) — Popular barbeque restaurant Freedmen’s has decided that Friday, Aug. 31 will be its last full day of service at its West Campus location.

The move comes as developers are getting ready to start work on building a 500-unit apartment complex at the northwest corner of West 24th Street and San Gabriel Street.

KXAN originally reported on the new Hilltop development in June. The developers plan on building multi-family housing units where Tap 24, 7-Eleven, Freedmen’s and a parking lot currently sit.

The developers told KXAN the complex will be built in a U-shape around the historic Freedmen’s building.

Freedmen’s owner, Cuatro Kowalski, tells Eater he plans to reopen the restaurant when construction is completed. In the interim, Kowalski still plans to provide catering services.
