First responders get special thanks with kind coffee gesture

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Nearly two months ago, customers at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf shops in Austin started buying bags of coffee and writing messages on them.

“My dad was a firefighter,” wrote one customer. “Thanks for all you do.”

“We love our first responders,” wrote 7-year-old Olivia Watson. “We appreciate you.”

The bags are part of an event to honor firefighters, police officers and medics at First Responders Day. On Friday, baristas passed out the coffee bags to first responders who visited the store.  The coffee shop created a special tea and dark roast coffee blend called “Heroes at Heart.”

Baristas started collecting the coffee bags back in May.

The store also raised more than $2,500 at all five of its locations. The money goes to the 100 Club of Central Texas, a non-profit that helps fallen or wounded firefighters and police officers.

“We are a California company, and after all of the wildfires there, we decided to do this to benefit local first responders,” said Jennifer Cox, the store’s district manager.
