AUSTIN (KXAN) — In 1990, when Family Eldercare found out an elderly person was overheating in their home and needed a fan, the agency stepped up — and that was the start of the Fan Drive.
During the first year of the drive, the agency collected 20 used fans to hand out to people in need.
Fast forward 28 years and Ruth Ellison, 91, was the recipient of the 100,000th fan. KXAN’s David Yeomans joined Family Eldercare on Thursday morning to drop off the fan at Ellison’s east Austin home where she’s lived for more than four decades.
Sitting in her recliner in a bright blue dress, Ellison was happy to get the special delivery.
“I don’t know what I want to say, because I don’t have any money to donate. But for you all to accept me as one person in the drive, that’s awesome,” says Ellison.
This year, with the help of Central Texans and KXAN viewers, nearly 7,000 fans have been donated.
“This is a huge milestone for Family Eldercare,” says Brittany Baize with Family Eldercare.
