AUSTIN (KXAN) — Officials arrested a man Monday morning suspected of shooting and killing three people Sunday in northwest Austin, ending a 20-hour manhunt. Authorities arrested Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, after multiple 911 calls of a suspicious person.

Two women and one man were found dead near Great Hills Trail and Rain Creek Parkway around 11:42 a.m., according to Austin-Travis County EMS. Police say it appears to be an isolated incident.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to his arrest.

Broderick was last seen wearing a gray hoodie and a baseball cap, police say. He is 5’7″ tall.

What we know about him

Broderick is a former Travis County Sheriff’s Office detective. He was initially placed on leave in June 2020 after being charged with sexual assault of a child that month. That charge is a first-degree felony. His bond at the time was set at $100,000 and the Texas Rangers were investigating.

He bonded out of jail days after his arrest, and resigned from the sheriff’s office, according to a spokeswoman.

It is not known if this case is connected to Sunday’s shooting.

Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said in a statement that his office filed a motion to revoke Broderick’s bond on Sunday. The office is “actively supporting the Austin Police Department and law enforcement who are using all available resources to apprehend” Broderick, according to the statement.

Broderick was also previously an investigator with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. According to a press release from March of 2013, he was one of two responding deputies who shot at a suspect after a family disturbance in Del Valle. Broderick was 32-years-old at the time.

He started working with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office on March 16, 2008.

Both deputies were put on leave as the Texas Rangers investigated, which is in line with standard protocol.
