Downtown Hooters demolished to make way for new Austin high-rise

Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The “Hooters” restaurant just south of downtown Austin is no longer standing after the restaurant closed its doors last month.

The building was torn down Wednesday to make way for the groundbreaking ceremony of an office tower called “River South,” a mixed-use 15-story high rise.

As part of its agreement with the city, the company behind the development, Stream Realty, is contributing more than one million dollars toward affordable housing.

“We won’t actually have housing on the property but we’ll contribute dollars to a fund that helps establish affordable housing across the city of Austin,” said David Blackbird, regional managing partner for Stream Realty.

The office tower is expected to be ready for tenants in 2022.
