AUSTIN (KXAN) — Firefighters knocked down a fire at a central Austin apartment complex that spread to two floors early Sunday morning.

The Austin Fire Department responded to flames consuming one building of the Argosy at Crestview apartments just after 6:00 a.m. The complex is located at 1003 Justin Lane, just before the intersection of Airport and North Lamar Boulevards.

Crews were able to get the fire under control in 15 minutes.

The cause of the fire is being ruled as accidental by fire investigators. Officials said it started because of an improperly discarded smoking material.

Fire officials said Austin-Travis County EMS transported one person to Dell Seton for possible smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson with the Austin Fire Department said only one building at the complex was evacuated and two apartments have fire damage. One other apartment has fire control damage and there’s minor smoke damage to seven apartments.

The Red Cross of Central Texas and apartment management are helping six people who were displaced.

The damage is estimated to cost $200,000, plus $100,000 in contents.
