Clear bag policy implemented for Central Texas high school athletics

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Those heading to games at some Central Texas schools will have to put their stuff in clear plastic bags in order to cheer on the athletes.

Austin Independent School District announced its clear bag policy will begin Aug. 30 and will be enforced at Burger Stadium, Delco Center, House Park Athletics Facility, Nelson Field and Noack Sports Complex. Lake Travis ISD also announced last month its athletic department will start a similar policy on Aug. 15 for all district-sponsored athletic events.

The new policy means all bags — including camera or binocular bags and diaper bags — are not allowed, but small clutch purses the size of a hand are OK. People who have medically-necessary items can have them inspected. Below are the types of clear bags people can take inside:

  • Size: no larger than 12″x6″x12″
  • Type: clear plastic, vinyl or PVC (one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags work, too)
  • Logo: Bags can have a logo no larger than 4.5″x3.4″

Last year, the University of Texas announced a clear bag policy for the Frank Erwin Center. It already had one for Texas athletic events.
