KXAN (AUSTIN) — This weekend marks an exciting time on the calendar of Austin’s marathon lovers. Though the Austin Marathon begins tomorrow, Feb. 17, the weekend’s festivities began today on East Riverside in front of the Palmer Event Center with the Manzano Mile.

The race is named after Leo Manzano, a silver medalist in the 2012 Olympics and a 2019 Austin Marathon Official Race Ambassador. The athlete is well-decorated with accolades, including being a four-time USA Track & Field National Champion, seven-time Team USA member, and first USA Olympic medalist in the 1500m since 1968.

The event is a representation of the two-time Olympian’s passion for health and fitness programs as well as community outreach, particularly with youth.

The event began at 11 a.m. at the Palmer Event Center and participants received snacks, drinks, and a shirt for the occasion upon registration.
