AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Transportation Department is connecting former Uber and Lyft drivers with other ridesharing companies at several job fairs this week.
The fairs will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — May 17, 18 and 19 — from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Austin Community College (ACC) Highland Campus in rooms 2211 and 2212.
Fare, GetMe, Wingz and Ztrip are at Tuesday’s fair.
The department says their goal is to encourage interested drivers to sign up with transportation network companies (TNC) still operating in Austin.
Staff will be available to set up appointments for fingerprint background checks through MorphoTrust — located across the street from ACC Highland at 5805 N. Lamar Blvd. — which the transportation department says is providing drivers a special rate of $39.95.
“We’re offering these opportunities to drivers so we can get people back to work and so we can assist transportation network companies that are willing to follow city code scale up their services,” said ATD Director Rob Spillar. “We want to make it easy for drivers and companies to connect to each other in order to provide service to the Austin community and this event facilitates that.”
The ACC Highland Campus is located at 6101 Airport Boulevard. Attendees should park on the east side of the building near Jonathan Drive, enter through the east entrance and follow the signs to the driver fair.
J. Corbin Kenneth Jenkins, with Austin Community College, says he has seen 500-600 people show up to the fair since Tuesday morning. “The goal is to keep Austin moving,” Jenkins said. “It’s all about coming together and get people moving.”
