AUSTIN (KXAN) — Federal workers here in Texas are starting to feel the effects of the government shutdown as families across the state are struggling to keep food on the table.
The Central Texas Food Bank held a special event today to help furloughed workers who are struggling to make ends meet.
Coast to coast, a growing number of food banks are holding similar events this week.
In Texas alone, there are more than 130,000 federal workers. This Friday will mark the second time furloughed employees will not receive a paycheck, which means missed mortgage payments, and piling debt.
“It’s been hard to juggle what money we do have and then just the fact of having to dip into savings, college funds for my children and emergencies that I may have. And this is you know, now I consider it an emergency,” said IRS employee Carmen Rosales.
Yesterday, the IRS demanded 36,000 employees to come back to work, without pay, in order to process tax refunds.
