Austin’s ‘Shop with a Cop’ tradition continues Friday

Shop with a cop

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some Austin children spent their morning Christmas shopping with Austin police officers Friday.

Austin’s “Shop with a Cop” has been a holiday tradition for the past 16 years.

Each year, officers with “Amigos en Azul,” which is Friends in Blue, take a group of disadvantaged kids shopping.

Students from different schools in the area are chosen each year and this year it was students from Zavala and Oak Springs elementary schools. Officers pay for the gifts the students choose.

Sometimes the kid’s shop for themselves, sometimes they shop for family members. Either way, the holidays are a little brighter for them and the officers, who say this a way to build a relationship with the community.
