Austin student heading to DC to compete in national spelling bee


AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some of the Austin area’s finest spellers came together to compete Thursday. We now know who will go on to represent central Texas in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in DC.

Pranathi Jammula from Kealing Middle School beat out students from schools in 10 local counties. The contest lasted for a few hours and finally wrapped just before 10 p.m.

When it came down to Jammula and one other contestant they were given a written spelling test.

Some of the final words they had to spell were: CHARPOY, SWIDDEN, and GLOCKENSPIEL.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee will begin Monday, May 27.
