Austin ISD approves new sex ed outline, school renaming/closures

Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin ISD leaders approved a new sex education outline, the renaming of John H. Reagan High and the confirmation of school closures during Monday night’s school board meeting.

Sex education additions

The district will overhaul what students between third and eighth grade learn in an effort to have more inclusive and up-to-date lessons.

Changes will include lessons on sexual orientation, gender identity and how to use a condom — all before high school.

The changes will go into effect for the 2019-20 school year.

School renaming

The board also voted to change the name of John H. Reagan High, which is named after the Confederate postmaster general.

The board decided between two two suggested names: Barack H. Obama High and North East High — ultimately deciding on Northeast Early College High School.

School closures

School closures were also confirmed, although the board will vote on a timeline that will finalize which schools will close in October. Criteria for closing will be finalized in May.
