Austin Fire Department Chief issues waterway ban in effect until Monday

Muddy waters of Lady Bird Lake meet the clear waters of Barton Creek in Austin on Oct. 25, 2018

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department has issued a waterway ban in effect until noon on Monday, May 6, due to heavy rains hitting the central Texas area.

The rain has resulted in high and swift waters with dangerous debris inside of them. Recreational, commercial and navigational use of the following waterways is unsafe:

  • Lake Austin from Mansfield Dam to Tom Miller Dam
  • Lady Bird Lake
  • Colorado River downstream of Longhorn Dam

An order issued by Austin Fire Department Chief Joel Baker said it is an offense to violate this ban or to pass through barricades at low water crossings.

The department will reevaluate waterways on Monday morning.
