Austin FC announced as name of city's Major League Soccer team

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The logo and team name for Austin's first major league professional sports team was revealed at an MLS2ATX fan appreciation event Wednesday evening.

Austin FC's logo features a green and white logo with two live oak trees made by The Butler Bros brand studio. The tree has four roots symbolizing all of Austin and the tree has 11 leaves, representing the 11 players on the pitch.

"We wanted to really focus on creating a badge that would stand for the entire city and we wanted to create a badge that would stand the test of time, because the ambitions of this team are to be here for a long time," said Adam Butler.

New renderings of the stadium, planned for McKalla Place in north Austin, were also released at the event, held at The North Door music venue.

Austin City Council voted in a 7-4 decision on Aug. 15 to authorize the negotiation with Precourt Sports Ventures to bring the Columbus Crew to Austin and build a 20,000-seat stadium at the currently empty site at Burnet Road and Braker Lane.

The proposal won over hesitant council members after the owners agreed to pay $3 million to CapMetro for bus service in the area.

Precourt Sports Ventures hopes to have the stadium ready for the 2021 MLS season.
