AUSTIN (KXAN) — A boil water notice issued for all Austin Water users Saturday night is expected to last a couple of days, city leaders said.

Austin Water said the Ullrich Water Treatment Plant is out of service due to an “internal treatment process issue that resulted in high turbidity within the plant.”

If you need water, there are seven water distribution sites open to the public.

The two Austin Water sites are open 24 hours, but if you are going to one of those two sites, you must bring an empty water container.

The locations at the Expo Center and Kelly Reeves do not have that requirement, but they have restricted opening hours. The Expo Center will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, and the stadium will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Austinites who have the ability and means to buy their own water should do so, the City of Austin said, so the limited supplies at these distribution sites can go to those who are most in need.

Most of the sites were selected based on community need with a priority on areas with higher levels of food insecurity, the city added.

During a boil water notice, you should use bottled water or boil tap water for drinking and to prepare and cook food. When boiling water, let the water bubble vigorously for two minutes before letting it cool for use.

In many cases, you can use tap water to wash your hands. When it comes to bathing or showering be careful not to swallow any water. Only use boiled water to brush your teeth.

The CDC said it is generally safe to use laundry machines and wash clothes as normal. When it comes to your dishwasher, that too is generally safe as long as your final rinse temperatures reaches at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit, the CDC said.

Airport giving water to passengers

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said it’s providing free bottled water to passengers in the terminal, according to its social media. The bottled water will be given out at these locations:

  • Gate 23 near Taco Deli
  • Gate 18 near the Austin Article
  • Gate 11 near Salvation Pizza

Williamson County distribution

Williamson County has set up a distribution center for its city of Austin residents at the Kelly Reeves Athletic Stadium off Parmer Lane. The distribution site will be open from noon until 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. The county has a limit of two cases per car until supplies run out.
