Austin Animal Center waives adoption fees after 456 dogs crowd shelter

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Animal Center is waiving adoption fees for medium and large dogs after 456 pups took over their shelter.

Shelter officials told KXAN it’s the most dogs they’ve seen in two years.  The shelter has seen a surge of animals this summer, including 43 that came in Friday.

They have run out of kennels to keep the dogs in so they are being kept in meeting rooms, offices and outdoor truckport kennels.

The center is also asking for people willing to temporarily foster dogs to come forward and help.

If you have lost a dog, center officials say they encourage you to come look for your pet there.

Also, if you are looking to add a new furry baby to your family, join KXAN and participating animal shelters on Saturday, Aug. 18 for Clear the Shelters.
