AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Animal Center is waiving adoption and reclaim fees until Oct. 21 after more than 250 dogs came into the shelter in the past week.
Shelter representatives posted on Facebook Sunday and said every single one of their kennels was full. The post also said volunteers are working tirelessly to figure out how to fit so many kennels in the space they have.
Volunteers have dogs waiting in crates in their conference room, holding area and outside on their truck port.
“A shelter this full can mean a crisis if we don’t find safe places for these dogs to go,” the post said. “They are more than a number, they are individual faces, with whiskers and puppy dog eyes that demand our help.”
The center had 400 dogs at the location at last report.
The fees will be waived through next weekend and people can also temporarily foster dogs. Find more information about pets up for adoption on the Austin Animal Center’s website.
