AUSTIN (KXAN) — A number of cars were broken into over the weekend near the Pennybacker Bridge Overlook in west Austin, victims report.
A lot of people returned from a scenic view to a scary one: Car windows smashed and belongings missing. It happened on Sunday in broad daylight.
Witnesses say over 100 cars lined the 360 loop, many of them there to see an impromptu concert on top of the overlook. That’s why it may come as a surprise that someone would be courageous enough to go down the line and break into the cars, one-by-one, stealing thousands of dollars of valuables in the process.
A scary sight
Pennybacker Bridge offers one of the best views in Austin.
“It’s beautiful up there. Especially on days like yesterday when it’s beautiful in the spring time,” said Zhora Mamujee, who lives in northwest Austin.
But yesterday, Mamujee and her husband Ali had a not-so-pleasant sight to see.
“This one girl was distraught and crying and we didn’t realize what had happened until we made it all the way to the back when we saw both of our windows broken at that point.” Mamujee’s car was one of approximately 20 that were broken into in broad daylight.
“We had our camera bag on the bottom here and then they broke into the back of the car,” she said.
Her camera, purse and all the valuables inside were gone. Mamujee estimates it to be about $2,000 loss. “We were out of our car for like 30 minutes or less. And in broad daylight. It wasn’t even dark at this point.”
The belongings are mostly all replaceable. That’s why Mamujee says her greatest loss is her sense of safety in her own city.
“This is Austin. We feel that this area is really safe, and for us to see that, that it has affected us, it kind of rocks you in a way.”
It’s unclear just how many people have been victimized. KXAN reached out to the Austin Police Department to find out; a spokesperson said they are looking into it.
KXAN will update this story when APD updates on who could be behind this mass break-in.
