AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man faces animal cruelty charges after allegedly admitting to his girlfriend that he killed her two cats, according to Austin police.

Robert McCabe, 25, also told officers that he killed his girlfriend’s cat back in early November, according to an affidavit.

That affidavit states that McCabe’s girlfriend returned home from work to find McCabe sweaty and out of breath. He told her that there was something wrong with her cat, a gray tabby named Blue. When she found Blue in the next room, the cat fell face first to the floor and was unresponsive. After attempting CPR, Blue died.

McCabe’s girlfriend told officers that she was suspicious of Blue’s death since her other cat died of similar unexplained circumstances back in September. Upon looking into McCabe’s diary, she found an entry where he wrote, “I got so high when I tortured them. I’m glad we’ve decided not to get another cat because as much as I love them I know I’ll do this again.”

The affidavit states that McCabe’s girlfriend moved out of the apartment the next day and confronted McCabe via text about her cats’ deaths. He admitted to her that he struck and choked the cat. He thought Blue was going to be OK but realized he had “gone too far.”

An animal autopsy was conducted on Blue and it was determined that trauma was the cause of death and that Blue sustained significant hemorrhaging. Based on Blue’s history, he was a healthy cat with no sign of systemic diseases.

McCabe told the investigating officer that he chased Blue around the apartment. He claimed he was just roughhousing with the cat when “something overtook him.”

McCabe has been arrested for cruelty to non-livestock animals, and his bond is set at $8,000.
