AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police say a gun battle between two people at a north Austin apartment complex left one person seriously injured Wednesday afternoon. Two people are in police custody including the man injured in the gunfire.
The first reports of the shooting were made just before noon at the 1900 block of East Anderson Lane.
Police say one man was standing on a balcony, shooting with a 9 mm pistol. The other man stood outside a car in the parking lot and was shooting with an AR-15.
At least a dozen shots were fired as the two exchanged gunfire and several bullets went into neighboring apartments though no one else was injured, police say.
The man on the balcony sustained a serious gunshot wound to his lower leg though it is non-life threatening. The other man drove away and police say it took about 20 to 25 minutes to find and detain him at the 1100 block of Eleanor Street.
Both suspects are cooperating with police during the investigation. Several witnesses who either live or work at the apartment complex are working with police as well.
Campuses of Reagan Early College High School and Sims Elementary School nearby were put on a 20-minute lockout which was later lifted, according to a tweet from Austin Independent School District at about 12:30 p.m. Neither AISD nor APD would confirm whether the lockout at the schools was connected to the shooting.
Officials do not believe there is any danger to the public.
