AUSTIN (KXAN) — Andrews Elementary School in east Austin was put on “lockout” Friday morning because of police activity in the area, AISD and Austin police say.
APD tried to serve a warrant at 7:55 a.m. about a mile south of the school, which is located at 6801 Northeast Dr., when that person took off. The school is near the intersection of State Highway 290 and U.S. Highway 183.
A lockout is slightly different than a lockdown. According to the new AISD Police policy, during a lockout, everyone is brought indoors, but classes go on as normal. During a lockdown, lights are turned off, interior doors are locked, windows are covered, and students are asked to keep silent.
