AUSTIN (KXAN) — Responders were kept busy early Sunday morning rescuing a man who fell over 50 feet down into a boiler shaft in the 2000 block of Guadalupe St.

The man had fallen into the boiler shaft from the roof of the Dobie Center, a private 27-story residence hall at the UT Austin campus. Austin Fire had to drill a hole into the shaft so they could lower a camera to get a better visual and access the victim.

AFD tried accessing the man from the top and bottom of the shaft, and were able to lift him out from the top of the boiler with a topside lowering system. The victim was then lowered down from the roof to the street.

Officials are not sure what the man was doing on the roof or how he fell into the boiler shaft. He was evaluated and transported by Austin-Travis County EMS to Dell Seton Medical Center with life threatening injuries.
